ECI Telecom is super-sizing its reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM), the company announced at the NXTComm trade show today. This fall, the Israeli equipment vendor will double the power of the 10-degree wavelength-selective switch (WSS) ROADM in its XDM transport platform from 40 wavelengths to 80, giving the system a total throughput of 800 Gb/s per single fiber pair. Though ROADMs can attenuate signals, ECI claims to overcome this effect using “bandwidth-tolerant” modulation formats for 50 GHz-spaced filters that it demonstrated at an optical trade show in March. Using this approach, ECI’s transponders and amplifiers will extend the reach of its ROADM from about 1500 kilometers to 2000. The vendor is also planning to announce having sold its ROADM to a consortium of independent U.S. telcos that are using it to build a statewide regional backbone network. On Monday, ECI announced that Emery Telecom, a telco cooperative based in Utah, was deploying the XDM. “Having the system go to 80 wavelengths, with integrated Ethernet and Sonet, provides greater flexibility for more any-to-any connectivity and more capacity between sites,” said Emanuel Nachum, ECI’s vice president of Americas marketing. Roughly three fourths of the ROADMs deployed today have just two degrees, according to Current Analysis. ECI’s platform allows carriers to start small and scale up as needed. Separately today, Motorola touted the debut of the Hi-Focus IP DSLAM it obtained through a partnership with ECI announced in April. Following media reports, ECI publicly acknowledged on Sunday it was discussing the possibility of an acquisition with an investment group called Swarth Investments. |
