BPlay to develop Glu games for BlackBerry

BlackBerry games and multimedia developer BPlay yesterday at NXTcomm announced a deal with mobile games publisher Glu Mobile to bring Glu’s line of Java titles to BlackBerry devices.

BPlay vice president Nicholas Reichenbach said that BPlay is bringing the broader world of mobile games to the BlackBerry, which has such a small market share of the overall phone market that most game developers don’t bother to support the platform. But with the launch of the BlackBerry Pearl, Research in Motion signaled its intent to take the popular business device mainstream. In order to tap into that market game developers need some one who can port their games over BlackBerry’s notoriously tricky operating system, a service BPlay has the expertise to provide, Reichenbach said.

“BPlay handles all of that content, and it handles all of the relationships with other publishers on a neutral basis,” he said.

The deal with Glu will license many of its popular games, including Monopoly Classic, Deerhunter II, Centipede and the World Series of Poker, as well as new titles such as the Transformers game being released ahead of the film. BPlay has also signed licensing deals with game publishers Hands On Mobile, THQ and PopCap Games.
