Veraz distributed switch offers flexibility

International service providers with high traffic levels within specific regions are the target market for a new distributed switch solution from Veraz. As Ed Camarena, Veraz vice president of marketing management, said, the product enables service providers to “leave switching capability to distributed elements across the network while still preserving centralized management.”

Previously, Camarena said, such service providers would have needed to deploy multiple switches, each of which would have required updating whenever routing configurations or other changes were made to the network.

With the new Veraz platform, Camarena said, “If an operator needs to add some routes or interconnection partners or a new switching node, they can update through the central management system, which updates all switch nodes.”

The distributed switch runs on off-the-shelf computing platforms such as Sun Solaris, minimizing the footprint and power required for individual nodes, Camarena added.

Veraz also today announced its first customer for the distributed switch, competitive Russian provider Golden Telecom.
