40 Gigabit Optical Transport
Jun 20, 2007 12:00 AM

Ciena (Booth 6415) introduces its FlexSelect 40G Shelf, which extends serial 40G optical transport capability to metro, regional and long-haul networks to help service providers scale bandwidth capacity to keep pace with growing network traffic from residential triple-play and business services. It reduces capital and operational expenditures through the use of a universal shelf that complements Ciena’s CN 4200 FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform and CoreStream Agility Optical Transport System. The FlexSelect 40G Shelf features eight hot-swappable and wavelength-provisionable line cards that aggregate 4x10G
clients, generate a 40G signal or regenerate 40G signals for Sonet, synchronous digital hierarchy or optical transport network (OTN) protocols up to 43 Gb/s. In addition, new 40G capacity can be intermixed with existing 10G services operating on the same fiber, making the migration to 40G seamless.

The FlexSelect 40G Shelf comes with full G.709 OTN support, so when combined with Ciena’s OTN extensions, electrically reconfigurable add/drop multiplexer (eROADM) and reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM), it enables efficient grooming and routing of any service from 10 Mb/s up to 40G anywhere on the network. In addition, the FlexSelect 40G Shelf is managed by Ciena’s ON-Center Network and Service Management Suite that offers network operators a unique set of tools for automated network and service management for efficient service deployment and granular service level management per customer per network.
