Multiservice Edge Router
Jun 20, 2007 12:00 AM

Redback Networks (Booth 2838), an Ericsson company, is announcing the SmartEdge 1200, a new series of routers with double the capacity for high-definition (HD) video and broadband mobility. This third-generation multiservice edge router features three major improvements: twice as much carrier capacity for video upgrades, extended triple-play services for mobile networks and integrated network applications. With these improvements, the SmartEdge can deliver full-service broadband, dynamically connecting wired and wireless infrastructures for video and broadband mobility into a single router. The SmartEdge 1200 extends triple-play services to broadband mobile users, enabling carriers to squeeze 14 Mb/s to 144 Mb/s of bandwidth into existing mobile pipes. The upgraded platform also integrates several popular network applications into a single router, including deep-packet inspection for peer-to-peer traffic management, advanced VoIP services for businesses and network firewall security for carriers and their customers. The SmartEdge 1200 also features unique technologies for network managers who can now perform live software upgrades, live maintenance operations and deliver video-like voice reliability (99.999%) for HDTV, video-on-demand and two-way video conferencing. The 1200 platform delivers 100% compatibility with the first two generations of SmartEdge 400 and 800 routers, and all three platforms run the same OS, applications and line cards.
